gave the film a d, and revenues are far below projections, with low reviews from both critics and audiences. the movie expected to garner more low ticket sales in the coming weeks, so our producer, sam, we have to figure out if she's going to go watch it. i don't think sam's going to go. and i also have heard that it's kind of like a it's a musical, but they kind of say and hum the words and it doesn't work. and it's awkward at times. but it was number one this weekend and that was the point of that story. all right. we're moving on right now at 11, after days of triple digit heat relief. yes. on the way, we've got the updated timeline for when we will see some cooler temperatures. also a solemn milestone for millions. tomorrow marks one year since the beginning of the israel-hamas war. the messages demonstrators on both sides of the conflict are sharing tonight, and they're still cleaning up from colleen. the southeast is bracing for another hurricane. we're speaking with a survivor about the challenges communities are facing after the storm. the news

11:02 pm

it's not normally this hot this time of year. to say the least. average highs upper 70s to low 80s. now we do have one more day tomorrow. as you see here on the heat index heat risk map, areas in red and purple, indicating that our inland locations could once again look at highs in the 90s to above 100 degrees and bayside 80s and 90s again may not be quite as hot as today, but monday still shaping up to be the eighth day in this heat wave. but watch what happens if the same map as we get through tuesday. now the extreme heat risk starts to subside as the sea breeze increases, the coastal fog comes back. finally, some better news showing up in that 7-day forecast. we'll give you the countdown to the cooldown ahead and our full forecast coming up in about ten minutes. all right, rob, thanks. don't forget, you can track the heat while you're on the go by downloading our free nbc bay area app. scan that qr code on your screen. it will take you straight to our weather page. we are following breaking news in the east bay police investigating a possible road rage incident that led to a deadly crash at a nearby gas station. this is happening at

now been in captivity for 365 days. those demands continue to. nbc bay area's thom jensen reports. hundreds marched through san francisco's mission district sunday, marking one year of war in gaza. free palestine brie free palestine. people demand really an end to this war and that, you know, we cannot be supporting politicians that continue supporting this war. a familiar refrain from demonstrators around the world today who called not just for an end to the war, but a two state solution ending israel's occupation of gaza. there's no question to me that unless a mass movement antiwar movement intervenes, we can be at the brink of a third world war. it's really being fueled by the continued brutality that our government is showing, and we need to continue to show up and declare we don't support this being carried out in our name. remati in tel aviv today, demonstrators are also calling

11:06 pm

there seems to be some agreement by individuals, both pro-israel and pro-palestine, that threats have increased. violence will not serve either side. well, i think if people are truly interested in helping palestinians, they they're not going to be rooting for war. they're going to be rooting for, you know, get these people back, get this war done. but as they called for a ceasefire and the immediate release of hostages, israel ended year one of the expanding conflict in the middle east with a new round of missile strikes on gaza and lebanon. in san francisco. thom jensen, nbc, bay area news. our coverage of the crisis in the middle east continues online, including a timeline of the events unfolding in the past year since october 7th. read the full story on our website nbcbayarea.com. in san francisco tonight, the community reacting to provocative graffiti at a popular meeting spot. manny's is a progressive event space, part cafe, part political

11:10 pm

hurricane helene resulted in the deaths of 235 people across the southeast. today, several more urban search and rescue teams arrived in buncombe county and north carolina to look for survivors. john ingle and his family say in their city, asheville, nearly everywhere they look, they see damage. to see so much of it washed away. nearly everything we love about the city is damaged beyond repair. is terribly sad. 73,000 people are still without power. but the big concern is water. we likely won't have water in this city for a month. no water means schools can't open. no water means daycares can't open. no schools and no daycares means no parents can work. supplies are also scarce. so john now volunteers to drive hours to get water, food and diapers for his neighbors. we've been filling up our car as much as we can with

11:11 pm

water. john says asheville relies on tourism, and he's already seeing people in the city furloughed. in east tennessee, where floodwaters from helene rose nearly to the ceiling inside homes, the tedious job of shoveling out feet of thick mud is underway. this home is still standing, but a lifetime of mementos are gone. 200 year old hats or 200 year old bibles or everything she held came out right here. but despite the damage and loss, people are coming together to lean on each other as they navigate the murky path ahead and receive help from bay area volunteers, firefighters and pg&e crews. to add to the long list of challenges, hurricane helene is flooding in western north carolina disrupted the underground nests of yellow jackets, causing them to swarm workers and residents trying to recover from the storm. marianne favro nbc, bay area news. we're

11:17 pm

happening this week. here's nbc bay area digital journalist jonathan bloom with what you need to know. it's the sound of freedom tearing through the sky over the bay. i'm jonathan bloom, and here's what to know about this year's san francisco fleet week. it all starts monday, october 7th, and the biggest events are happening right here on the waterfront. toward the end of the week, but long before you hear the sound of jets overhead, you'll start to hear music popping up all over the city in free neighborhood concerts. i just love singing up on you. meet the destroyers there, sailors rocking out in uniform and they're coming back. this year, along with another rock band from the air force, the rock concerts are wednesday through saturday at pier 39. and this year, the marine corps and the navy are bringing their brass bands and woodwind quintets to venues across the city, including a special concert thursday night to honor our fallen. tickets are free, but you have to reserve them in advance. of course, fleet week

11:18 pm

means a lot of big ships sailing through the golden gate, and some of those ships will be open for free tours during the daytime starting wednesday, heading towards the front of the ship. that includes an amphibious assault carrier like this one, the uss tripoli, which we toured the very first time it came to san francisco. the navy is also planning to bring an amphibious transport dock like this one. starting thursday, you'll be able to tour a coast guard cutter, and saturday and sunday you can even tour a naval ship from canada. friday is when things really kick into high gear, starting with the parade of ships and one of the best places to watch that is right here at the beach. it's a tradition that dates back to the 1890s. naval and coast guard ships sailing through the golden gate with a water cannon escort from the fire department. there's just one chance to see it. and it's friday at 11 a.m. after that, you might want to look up because right where i'm standing is the landing zone for the leapfrogs. the navy's parachute team. they kick off the fleet week air show by flying the colors in from above. and weather permitting, they're part of the show for all three

11:19 pm

days. friday, saturday, and sunday from noon to four. the rest of the air show happens over the water between the golden gate bridge and alcatraz, and right here is where they'll set up the grandstand, and it will include vintage military jets like this lockheed t-33 and brand new ones like the marine corps f 35. if you're close enough, you'll be able to see demonstrations like this coast guard helicopter rescue. now, if you want box seats for the air show, those can get expensive, but most people watch it for free from right here on the marina green. it's also where you can check out the military's mobile hospitals and disaster response technology. then, around 315, you'll hear an unmistakable sound. the navy's blue angels are the grand finale to the air show. first, the cargo plane fat albert, then the sixth f, a 18 super hornets flying maneuvers and formations that put them just 18in apart. you can keep watching this vide, but trust me, it's a whole different experience to see them in person. just remember, it's best to come early and take

11:20 pm

public transit because while the pilots will be flying in and out of here, drivers will be sitting in traffic. jonathan is right. every year it happens. and what is it going to be like that? i mean, what if what if it had been this weekend, it would have been something all the big college football games 49ers game today, well, it will be cooler for fleet week. so there's the good news. come air show time, we'll have to watch the fog again. remember that? yeah. very well. that fog. yeah. it's coming back to the forecast. and then officially it will be cooling down around the bay area. but let's start off with the first couple of days here. fleet week. and look at the three day forecast for san francisco. and still pretty warm tomorrow mid 80s around downtown. then we drop into the seconds. but any guesses to the temperature in san francisco here at 11:00? we're still at 80 degrees outside. lows tonight eventually dropping into the 60s around downtown. but the higher hills around downtown san francisco and across the rest of

11:21 pm

the bay area may stay in the 70s and 80s overnight. right now, 82 degrees in san rafael. as you head over to walnut creek, 78 degrees and into san jose. again, it is still shorts weather here at 11:00 80 in san jose, which is pretty close to the average high for this time of year. so 70s and 80s around the bay area at this hour tells you a couple of things. one, we really don't have a sea breeze out there. there's no strong onshore wind and the air aloft is warm and it's dry thanks to strong high pressure locking in these temperatures for one more day. so we begin tomorrow morning. 60s and 70s to wake up to no signs of fog just yet, and it will be another day of numbers in the 90s to above 100 degrees south of downtown san jose may not be quite as hot as today, but still not what you expect to see this time of year. with numbers near 100 degrees around pleasanton, 102 in livermore, 87 into oakland, 91 redwood city, downtown san francisco, close to 85 degrees and more 90s into the north bay. so the transition will happen late tomorrow. you've got a few high clouds, much like we've

11:22 pm

been seeing over the last couple of days during the day tomorrow. but here is the outlook heading into tuesday morning. that's the fog we've been missing. and as the fog builds up on the coast and the marine layer deepens, that ocean air conditioning effect does start to kick in on tuesday. so mostly 80s and low 90s inland on tuesday. then by wednesday low to mid 80s inland 70s bay side and that downward trend of temperatures continues as we head towards thursday with the return of those low clouds and fog, maybe around air show time for the blue angels. you have to watch. if they fly the high show or the low show due to the fog, we know what that's like. this time of year, but we're out of the heat after tomorrow. that is the big headline. this will be the eighth day of this heat wave tomorrow, and then the heat advisory should come off the board as we head into tuesday and wednesday. cooler temperatures next weekend and the long range forecast getting more interesting friday into saturday. some showers could be making a comeback to the north coast. we'll take a closer look at that. coming up at 1145, but no signs of any heat. finally, in that 7-day forecast, rain in

11:23 pm

there too. somewhere, possibly on the north coast. all right, rob, thanks. well, up next, the sizzling temperatures did not stop the faithful from cheering on the niners. the record breaking temperatures at

welcome back. i'm anthony flores at levi's stadium who had this

11:30 pm

on their bingo card. the 49ers are winless in the division after blowing a double digit fourth quarter lead to the arizona cardinals. a record setting heat wave greeted the 49ers and the cardinals. at one point, it was 100 degrees, making it the hottest game in the levi's stadium era. after falling behind seven nothing, brock purdy and the offense getting going. purdy hits george kittle with his 50th career touchdown pass. he's the fastest to get to 50 in franchise history. he did it in 30 games. niners led ten seven after one. the defense grabs the momentum in the second quarter. jordan elliott blocks the field goal attempt. leonard scoops it and races 61 yards for the touchdown. 2310 49ers at the break, but their offense would get shut out in the second half. fourth quarter kyler murray hits elijah higgins with a short touchdown pass. the two point conversion was good to make it a

11:31 pm

two point game. then with the niners field goal kicker out with an ankle injury, the niners are marching to add to their lead. but jordan mason fumbles in the red zone. arizona responds with a 35 yard field goal from chad ryland to take a one point lead. with under two minutes to go in the fourth quarter. any chance of a niners comeback ends with brock purdy's second interception of the game. the cardinals rally to upset the 49ers 24 to 23. it's the second time in three weeks the 49ers have lost a double digit lead in the fourth quarter. i'm extremely frustrated. i think we had 13 points and 17in the other. by no means should we be able to give that away. always will come back to turnovers in my opinion. there's other things you can do to overcome them. we talked about last night how we thought a key in this game would be turnovers. and that's exactly what the first half was. gave us a huge advantage. and then it flipped in the second half. and when you do that it's tough to win. we just need to play better

11:32 pm

and that starts with myself. get down in the red zone. we got to execute and score touchdowns. i thought there was multiple times where we could have pulled away. we have to be able to go down the field and execute and put points up on the board and not give the other team life. we had the game won and we gave it away. you know, but you got to kind of wipe it and get on to the next. you know, it's not there's really not any time to sulk or feel sorry for yourself. you got to you got to move on. so the 49ers fall to two and three on the season and zero and two in the division. but there is no time to dwell on the loss. they have a quick turnaround. they play on the road. thursday in seattle. the silver and black are also at two and three on the season. after losing in the mile high city started out great for the raiders. first quarter. gardner minshew hits brock bowers and the pride of napa takes it 57 yards for the touchdown. raiders led ten. nothing. it was all downhill from there. the raiders, on the verge of scoring again, but minshew is picked off by patrick certain. he returns it 100 yards for the touchdown. minshew was

11:33 pm

later benched in place of aidan o'connell, but it didn't matter. the broncos stampede the raiders 34 to 18. touchdown! back out here at levi's stadium, where the 49ers lose to the arizona cardinals by a point, 24 to 23. and in the mlb playoffs, the phillies beat the mets and the padres topped the dodgers. both series are tied at one win apiece at levi's stadium in santa clara. anthony flores nbc bay area. we are back in seconds. just ahead, an update on a dog trainer accused of returning the wrong dog to a bay area family. we investigate the new charges. she's now facing does mark farrell have the right experience to shake up city hall? in nearly ten years as supervisor, mark grew the bureaucracy by authorizing or creating a commission almost every year. he rubber stamped hundreds of millions to homeless nonprofits with zero accountability and orchestrated a pay-to-play scheme

they've arrested anderson. back in 2004, he was sentenced to 17 years in prison after he was convicted of arson. the high temps are making it tough on firefighters in lake county. evacuation orders have been downgraded to warnings on the glen haven fire. the fire sparked friday on a hillside on the north side of clear lake. flames have burned 417 acres and destroyed two structures. the fire is now 43% contained and crews are using water from clear lake to help get the glen haven fire fully contained. they have been using a large pump to pull from the lake instead of tapping into the community's water source. cal fire says this helps preserve local water sources for drinking and residential use. now to what is a nightmare scenario? while flying. you're up in the air when the pilot suddenly passes out. it happened yesterday in the central valley. the only passenger on board had to take the controls and figure out how to land a plane. nbc's dana griffin has the details.

miracle in the air. are you with me? yes, i am an air traffic controller talking an inexperienced passenger through piloting a twin engine aircraft. when the pilot lost consciousness mid-air. okay, so make sure you add a little bit of power. what was supposed to be a flight from las vegas to the central coast turned into an all hands on deck operation to get the plane safely on the ground. look, this animation shows the plane taking off near las vegas, nevada friday morning. its final destination monterey, california. but the plane was diverted nearly 100 miles southeast to meadows field in bakersfield, california. but the journey there was harrowing. are you able to add power so our airspeed doesn't get too low? yeah, it's 132. okay, that's absolutely perfect. at the airfield, ron brewster, the kern county director of airports, and his team were standing by. we were able to get fire, ambulance, and everybody on standby. so as the aircraft came to a stop, they were getting medical attention within

11:43 pm

seconds, thanks to a team of aviation experts and this calm air traffic controller. your airspeed is looking good from here. the passenger safely landed confirmed aircraft for care. one patient cardiac arrest. but unfortunately, the ordeal has a tragic ending. he was pronounced deceased at the hospital. as for the brave woman at the controls, how is she dealing with the tragedy? so she's doing that. she's doing the best she can based on the circumstances. yeah. up next fall, fires are all too common in the bay area. we'll take a closer look at how the recent heat is impacting the fire risk. and the hot days. warm nights. certainly not helping. look at the temperatures around the bay area here. approaching midnight. we're still in the 80s. across the hills around the bay area. wel'l

vegetation that could potentially fuel future wildfires. and this week, san jose state's fire weather lab and our rob mayeda took a close look at how the heat is impacting fire danger during what is typically our driest time of year. typically, in early october, you can expect to see the peak of fire danger along with some of the driest conditions of the year. but this hasn't been a typical year. when you consider the nearly month long record heat we had in july and now the record temperatures

11:47 pm

to start off the month of october. so today we're atop mount aluminum with the san jose state's fire weather lab to see how these current weather conditions are impacting fire danger now and moving forward. on the first in the 15th, we come up here, take live fuel moisture samples of the shamier and manzanita up here, and those go into a larger database tracking those fuel moistures for fire managers. and this is how fuel moisture content gets calculated. samples are taken back to the lab where they're weighed, put into an oven for 24 hours. then those same samples are reweighed again. the difference in weight equals fuel moisture content, which can say a lot about fire danger. the last couple of months, we've been getting moisture levels pretty close to regular normal for this kind of time of year. but with this current heat wave, we're expecting moisture levels to decrease similarly to how they decreased during the heat waves that we experienced in july. heat waves can certainly affect short term fire danger,

11:48 pm

but the larger threat now moving forward into fall is the wind. we're also entering the season where we get a lot of downslope winds. so offshore winds typically we call them santa ana winds or diablo winds based those those can really exacerbate the fire weather conditions. and so this is still a pretty critical time for fire managers in assessing fire risk. bone dry. we're still in the first week of october. we got a long time to go in this weather season and this fire season rob mayeda to really drive the point home even more. yeah, the two heat waves really stand out. we talked about the july heat wave, which was a month long, and unfortunately where the fuel moistures are concerned, we had above average. so we're doing better to start summer. and then the july heat wave put us down to record dry levels in which just happened obviously within the last week, is that those fuel moistures have dropped off again. it is most likely by the time the next numbers are run on the 15th, as the students go back up to the top of mount eminem, this most recent heat

11:49 pm

wave will likely push us back to below average values to record dry, and it's the reason why significant fire activity across the bay area and the interior northern california has been adjusted higher than average or higher than average risk for some intense wildfires due to these very dry conditions in the record heat, we're seeing now, now november through january still expected to be average. but all of that hinges on the seasonal return back to cooler temperatures and rain, something we're not really seeing much of in the forecast, at least for the moment. to start the workweek, more heat, hot days, warm nights ahead, but then cooler changes, finally returning to the forecast as we head towards tuesday and wednesday. but these temperatures are really surprising. you've been stepping outside this evening. it is still warm 80 degrees in san jose. we're almost to midnight now, 78 degrees in walnut creek, and it's 80 in san francisco after a record high of 97 degrees today. so without the sea breeze, without the fog, no sign of any ocean air conditioning. and you can see the winds are still slightly offshore. we're going to start

11:50 pm

off to a pretty warm day tomorrow. numbers in the 60s and 70s as you wake up tomorrow morning. tomorrow by noon, seconds all over the place for inland valleys and then some changes by mid afternoon. a bit stronger of a sea breeze. no fog just yet. inland. highs upper 90s to above 100 degrees around the tri valley. 80s and 90s. bayside from san francisco to oakland so it will drive. the trains will be two parts. first, a stronger sea breeze and eventually by tuesday, the low clouds finally make a comeback. so as the fog comes back, that's like the coolant to the sea breeze and you'll begin to see the coupling of the coastal low clouds and fog and the onshore winds leading to those cooler temperatures. and as that marine air deepens up above 1000ft by wednesday. now our inland highs have dropped into the upper 70s to mid 80s inland, and we should stay there wednesday into thursday before maybe some interesting changes. heading towards the end of the week. a reminder this is still one of the driest times of the year, but moving forward, maybe next weekend we could see a chance of

11:51 pm

some showers on the north coast. what's really helpful here is at least we're not seeing any signs of strong high pressure. but there you go. a slight chance of a few showers, some clouds, maybe towards the end of the week. much cooler changes ahead as we approach next weekend. so one more day of the heat. that's tomorrow. and then inland areas begin to see that temperature drop off that continues through the 7-day forecast. so triple digits going out 70s and 80s moving in as we head towards the middle part of the week. darn good weather for fleet week. it will be much cooler. all right rob. well, coming up, protecting football players from concussions. the new helmets the nfl is using and how they work

11:52 pm

11:53 pm

the league unveiled a new line of high tech helmets to protect a player's skull from violent hits like that one right over there. he's going to run. yeah.

11:54 pm

analyzed game footage from about 1500 on field concussions. and they looked at who was involved and conducted several lab tests, then designed helmets for the players specific positions. a quarterback and a linebacker are not necessarily playing the same sport on every play, and the frequency of their head impacts demonstrates that new helmets for quarterbacks have extra padding in the back for when quarterbacks are sacked. helmets for offensive and defensive linemen are equipped with more protection in the front, and many of them can be customized. nfl says thanks to the improvements, concussions in the preseason are down roughly 50% each of the last two years. wel, coming up tomorrow morning on today, another installment of the nfl series inside the game. nbc's kaylee hartung was at the steelers game tonight with the team's number one fan. none other than snoop dogg. watch that exclusive tomorrow morning on today. the highly anticipated joker sequel maybe number one at the box office, but many are

11:55 pm

already calling it a flop. you can do anything you want. the sun comes here, joker. joker. folie a deux led the domestic box office this weekend, but its score on rotten tomatoes has dropped from 63% after the venice film festival to 33%. ticket buyers polled on opening night gave the film a d, and revenues are far below projections. keep in mind, though, a d is a passing grade. technically, with low reviews from both critics and audiences, the movie is expected to garner more low tketic

businesses and celebrate all the castro district has to offer. today, the event has grown to encompass many shops around there, restaurants, artists, performers, organizations. the heat, though it did keep folks in the shade they were looking to stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day, but it was still a milestone to remember. there's three stages as well as chiles, sf and the sundance saloon. folks who are doing line dancing and country western dancing behind the castro theater, you'll see a cast of amazing characters from in and around the castro, who are just here, you know, enjoying the day as well as plenty of vendors, street vendors, and food vendors. so come and do some shopping. the fair is a nonprofit. donations and proceeds. they help support dozens of local nonprofits within the castro community. we believe that weather deserves another look at encore performance because the relief is on the way. good news. finally in the forecast. one more hot day tomorrow. cooler changes by midweek and a
